This is the Logo Rundown, your monthly glimpse into what’s going on out there in the world of branding and logos.
- Yelp
I noticed this on my phone in real time – Yelp changed from the 3 color flat icon to a 2 color brighter red and white with the sort of frosted overlay that all icons used to have in the early 2010’s. As usual, people on twitter raged about it. This design simply tracks with the trends. On a side note, I can’t look at that and not think of Yoplait yogurt…pretty similar too actually. And looking back at a previous Logo Rundown, the Yelp logo looks more like Wal-Mart’s than Kanye West’s.

2. The Marvels

The Captain Marvel film was shoehorned in the MCU right before End Game and was marketed as required reading to know what was going on for the finale. In actuality, they should have make the Black Widow film then, it would have been way more relevant and made way more sense. But anyway, there’s a Captain Marvel sequel coming out and word on the interwebs is this is what the logo will look like – a composite logo of Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and Spectrum.
I find myself, and I don’t think I’m alone here, but I find myself completely spent on superhero films. It was a good 20 year run spanning X-Men, the Nolan Batman run, Iron Man and the Infinity Saga of the MCU, Watchmen, Justice League…there’s been good ones and bad ones…but it’s all kinda…”meh” at this point for me.

3. Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are retiring their in-stadium horse mascot, Warpaint. I’ve covered this phenomenon with previous posts in Aunt Jemima, Washington Redskins…etc…same scenario. On a side, I discovered the band, Warpaint, they’ve got a few really good songs. But the Chiefs say they’re keeping the name “Chiefs” and other elements of the imagery…I’m sure we all believe that.
4. Mahindra

Like other auto makers this year, Mahindra&Mahindra are updating their logo. Look at that. When it’s inevitably lit up in the car it’s going to look like an angry wasp staring at you.
One thing about this logo is it goes against the grain of the trend in that it’s a very 3D style logo and doesn’t streamline as well.

5. Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians…see Warpaint, etc…have changed their name to the Cleveland Guardians. The logo is a baseball with wings. I’m certain there isn’t a single Clevelander excited about this no-frills, ultra-safe, zero personality logo.
Here’s where they went wrong though. The Washington Redskins (Washington Football Team) did it right. You change the name but put nothing in its place. You make no attempt to change the logo into something. Everyone knows what the Washington “football team” is called. If you went back to 1995 and said “When is the next Cleveland Guardians game?” – no one would know what the hell you’re talking about. But if you asked someone “When is the next Washington football team game?” – they will automatically assume you’re talking about the Redskins.
