Logo Rundown – June

This is the logo rundown, your monthly snapshot into what’s going on in branding out there in the big world.

Boston Celtics

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving scrapes his foot on the Boston Celtics logo at mid-court after they defeated the Celtics in Game 4 during an NBA basketball first-round playoff series, Sunday, May 30, 2021, in Boston. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

Following the Nets’ Game 4 victory over the Boston Celtics, Kyrie Irving walked up and “stomped” on the Celtics logo. “Stomped” is a bit dramatic…the actual video was pretty subtle…it was really just a level up from stepping. When you put your logo or seal in the middle of the floor…this is inevitable…just getting stepped on. Schools will often have an inlay seal on the floor in the entrance and then the tradition (which no one in history has every observed) is to not step on it.

This kind of thing is good for sports. Players are traded left and right. There’s hardly any team loyalty, therefore there’s no rivalries. The sport needs teams that hate each other. Unrelated – you’ll remember I ranked the Boston Celtics’ logo as the best in the NBA.

Columbus Crew

I’m not sure if this is a new trend – renaming a sports team to a totally generic name. The Columbus Crew ownership attempted to rename the team to “Columbus SC”…why do teams – specifically soccer – have to do this? Locally, we had the Carolina Railhawks…it was cool and the games were cheap and fun. Now they’re “NC FC” and I’ve never been back.

Of course the Washington Redskins, now Washington Football Team being the most front and center case of this. I predict they’ll ALL be “Location Football Team” eventually because there WILL be some group to criticize and feign offense to ANY name.

So, much like we saw with the Sonic film, the Columbus ownership recognized the fan base was not happy with this change and changed back. The new logo is just the letter “C”. Look at this logo though…it looks like a late 1980’s band.

FlyQuest

FlyQuest is an eSports team who plays League of Legends. It’s really just a slow month, so here it is. There’s a leaf in the “Q”…it’s supposed to look environmentally friendly or something. I don’t know…I don’t know the culture, but I don’t get “gaming” when I look at this.

Warner Bros Discovery

Warner Bros…we’re talking The Matrix, Batman, Harry Potter, Looney Tunes, Goonies, Gremlins…then Discovery…Shark Week, MythBusters, The Bible, History Channel, Animal Planet…

Take this juggernaut in, combine them and we get the most unthought name in “Warner Bros Discovery” and a logo to perfectly match the name. Look at that! Folks, this is truly something to behold. Some board of directors greenlit this. This is MAYBE the result of a 3 minute Blender tutorial…3 minutes might be pushing it. If I’m an animator, an artist, a graphics specialist…hell, if I’m the receptionist, this is an embarrassment. When I look at this, I hear one of those high school band fail videos in my head when they’re out of tune, wrong notes, off time.

Thank’s for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed this post. Through tonight only, original art is 30% OFF in my Etsy shop – excluding Wizard of Oz pieces, but even then, I’m not really over priced anyway. Head over and pick up a piece of artwork at this massive discount! I hope you have a great evening and I’ll be back soon with a new post.
